Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, and the Ministry of Health (MoH) will formally launch a newly rehabilitated 48-bed pediatric unit at Bentiu State Hospital (BSH) in Unity State.
This unit, designed to serve both outpatients and inpatients, offers a range of services including vaccinations, malaria treatment, and general inpatient wards while also supporting the hospital’s emergency admissions.
MSF Project Coordinator James Mutharia emphasized the significance of this collaboration with the Ministry of Health, highlighting MSF’s commitment to transitioning all primary and secondary healthcare services from the Bentiu IDP camp facility to Bentiu State Hospital by 2025.
He notes that this transition is crucial to ensuring sustained healthcare for the Unity State community, with MSF working to minimize disruptions in patient care.
“This new pediatric unit represents MSF’s dedication to healthcare in Unity State and our transition plan to ensure uninterrupted services for the local communities,” said Mutharia.
In 2023, MSF’s team at Bentiu conducted 45,987 emergency consultations, treated over 4,000 malaria patients, and admitted 1,277 children to the Inpatient Therapeutic Feeding Center (ITFC).
Since 2015, MSF has operated in the Bentiu camp, offering a wide range of secondary healthcare services including emergency, surgery, maternity, neonatal, pediatric, and adult care with a capacity of 135 beds.
