The United Nations Women Organization is calling on journalists in South Sudan to play a pivotal role in promoting gender-sensitive reporting and amplifying women’s voices across the country.
Speaking at a media engagement in Juba on Wednesday, Dr. Rukaya Mohammed, the Deputy Country Representative of UN Women, emphasized the importance of journalists working collaboratively to challenge harmful gender norms that hinder progress in gender equality.
“The media must play a vital role in promoting gender-sensitive reporting and amplifying women’s voices. We need to dismantle harmful gender norms, stereotypes, and discrimination that are worsening our efforts in advancing gender equality,” Dr. Rukaya said.
The media engagement, organized by UN Women, aimed to strengthen the organization’s partnership with the media and coordinate efforts to promote gender equality in South Sudan, especially with the upcoming elections and ongoing peace efforts.
Dr. Rukaya commended journalists for their commitment to covering gender and women empowerment issues, urging them to continue working with UN Women to create a more equitable and inclusive society.
