Residents of Ibalany in Torit County are gearing up for the upcoming general elections scheduled for December 2024, despite the challenging economic situation in the country.
This sentiment was expressed during a community discussion organized by Radio Emmanuel with support from UNESCO over the weekend.
Mary Nyoka Frederick, a resident of Ibalany, voiced the community’s desire to know the candidates who will be contesting in the upcoming elections.
“We want the candidates who are going to compete in the election to be made public so that we can stand with them. We cannot go for elections without knowing those who are competing,” she said.
Another resident, Paul Okitik, expressed concern about the current economic hardships facing the country.
“Election is good, but we are in a very difficult situation. Everything is tied to the dollar, and we have not even seen the dollar,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, Chakut Opit called for government recognition of people with disabilities. “We just need food. We are very happy with the government, but one thing they have failed to do is recognize us who are disabled,” he stated.
Abdallah Ogira, another participant, emphasized the need for voter registration as the country approaches the elections.
“We don’t need to be disturbed. We are left with three months; we need registration and campaign to start soon because we are running out of time,” he urged.
