On Thursday, August 22, 2024, Justice Ruben Madol Arol, South Sudan’s Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, met with a delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to discuss their ongoing and future cooperation in South Sudan.

The meeting focused on improving overcrowded detention facilities to enhance the well-being of prisoners. Both the ICRC and the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs have committed to working together on this issue.

Florence Gillette, the head of the ICRC delegation, highlighted the meeting’s emphasis on potential future collaborations. She spoke about the importance of implementing and disseminating ratified instruments related to justice and improving detention conditions in South Sudan.

Gillette acknowledged the challenges facing South Sudan’s justice system and pledged to find solutions to improve detention facilities.

Dr. Gabriel Isaac, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, confirmed the ministry’s commitment to working with the ICRC to address the overcrowding issues, particularly in Juba’s detention center, which faces severe overcrowding problems.

Dr. Isaac also noted that the ICRC will provide training on humanitarian issues to legal counselors and other rule-of-law institutions. This training will ensure that these institutions are well-equipped with knowledge of international and regional legal instruments.

The collaborative efforts aim to enhance the conditions within detention centers and strengthen the overall justice system in South Sudan.
