Pope Francis Appoints New Bishops for Kenya’s Military Ordinariate and Embu Diocese

Pope Francis has appointed Rt. Rev. Wallace Ng’ang’a as the Bishop of the Military Ordinariate of Kenya and Rev. Fr. Peter Kimani Ndu’ngu as the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Embu. The Vatican officially announced these appointments on 15th August 2024, with the news published in L’Osservatore Romano at 12:00 pm Rome time (1:00 pm Kenyan time).

His Excellency Archbishop Bert van Megen, the Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya and South Sudan, communicated the appointments to the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) through an official letter.

Bishop Wallace Ng’ang’a

Bishop Wallace Ng’ang’a, prior to this new appointment, served as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Nairobi. He was ordained and installed as Auxiliary Bishop on 6th April 2024, following his appointment on 14th February 2024. In addition to his episcopal duties, Bishop Ng’ang’a has been actively involved with the KCCB, serving as the Chairman of the Commission for Social Communications and Vice Chairman of the Commission for Pastoral and Lay Apostolate.

Brief Biography

Bishop Wallace began his religious formation in 1996 at St. Mary’s Molo Seminary. He continued his philosophical studies at St. Augustine Major Seminary Mabanga from 1997 to 1998, and completed his theological studies at St. Mathias Mulumba Major Seminary in Eldoret from 1999 to 2003. He also holds a Master’s degree in Pastoral Theology from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).

Ordained as a priest on 21st May 2005, Bishop Wallace has served in various parishes across the Archdiocese of Nairobi, including St. John the Evangelist Parish in Githiga, Sts. Peter and Paul Kiambu, and St. Peter the Apostle Kikuyu Parish. He has also held significant roles such as Pastoral Coordinator of the Archdiocese of Nairobi, Parish Priest at Christ the King Embakasi, and Father-in-Charge at Queen of Apostles Parish, Ruaraka.

Bishop-Elect Peter Kimani Ndung’u

Rev. Fr. Peter Kimani Ndu’ngu, the newly appointed Bishop of Embu, was born in 1966 in Kamuchege village, Holy Family Githunguri Parish. He began his religious education at Queen of Apostles Junior Seminary in 1982, completing his secondary and advanced certificate education there by 1987.

Fr. Kimani pursued a diploma in philosophical and religious studies at the Apostles of Jesus Major Seminary from 1984 to 1990, followed by a Bachelor of Arts in Sacred Theology from 1991 to 1994. He was ordained a deacon in 1994 and a priest in 1995 for the Archdiocese of Nairobi.

Brief Biography

Fr. Kimani’s ministry has been marked by various pastoral and leadership roles. He served as a deacon at Holy Family Parish, Githunguri (1994-1995), and as an assistant priest at St. Peter & Paul Kiambu (1995-1999). He later became the Father-in-Charge at Holy Rosary Parish, Kamwangi (1999-2001). Since 2001, Fr. Kimani has been the National Chaplain of the Kenya Prison Service and, since 2008, the Africa representative for the International Catholic Commission for Prisons Pastoral Care (ICCPPC).

His work has taken him across the globe, representing ICCPPC in Italy, Germany, Austria, the USA, Brazil, Argentina, and South Africa, among other countries. In addition to his pastoral duties, Fr. Kimani holds certifications in Counseling Skills for Rehabilitation of Offenders, Trauma Counseling Skills, and Staff Training for Correctional Leadership.

The appointments of Bishop Ng’ang’a and Bishop-Elect Kimani mark significant milestones in the leadership of the Catholic Church in Kenya, bringing new energy and experience to their respective roles. The faithful in both the Military Ordinariate and the Diocese of Embu eagerly await their leadership in guiding their spiritual journeys and fostering the growth of the Church.
