Citizens admits postive impact after expansion of clean water supply system in Torit

The Citizens of Eastern Equatoria State says the new water supply have improved their lives from the suffering they had in the past. 

The government of Germany in partnership with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) rehabilitated and expanded 25 clean water supply systems in Torit Town. 

In an interview with the local community in Torit, Anna Abau Abahala explains how significant the water supply is to their lives in terms of time-saving and the distance to the water points.

“This water has improved our lives a lot, and I would like to give thanks to the partners who managed to improve our standard of living by providing clean water for us in Torit here.”

The 20-year-old girl appeals to the Government of Germany and UNICEF to expand the water supply system to vulnerable people in the villages to save their lives from diseases like typhoid and cholera.

“I would like to encourage you as partners to provide this water supply to other areas that are still lacking this water so that it can improve their lives as it has improved our lives in this area.”

Mr. Augustine Penantovic a water seller in Torit Town says the new purified water has attracted more customers than before when he used to fetch his water from the River which many foreigners within Torit didn’t like to drink. 

“Many people are now using the new water supply and I can get around 10 to 15 thousand South Sudan pounds in a day depending on the request of customers,” he adds.

The water seller supply people around Torit using bicycle is buying 6 Jeri-can at 500 SSP and gets 500 SSP as his profit.  

One of the local chiefs in Torit Faisal Abas said the local chiefs, partners, and the Ministry of Urban Water in Torit will put more effort to make sure water continue to save the community in his area that faces a lot of challenges.

“As local chiefs, we are going to form a committee to make sure that this water continues to save the community to make sure that the police are deployed in the water points to maintain for security purpose.”

Abas appeals to Town Mayor and the Ministry of Urban Water not to leave the water to collapse as UNICEF handed over, citing that the government together with the community should continue to take good care of the water.
