The government of Germany and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have inaugurated a water supply system in Eastern Equatoria State which cast an amount of two million US Dollars.
Speaking during the handover ceremony on July 22, the Ambassador of Germany to South Sudan H.E. Christian Sedat says, the rehabilitated water supply system will bring substantial economic and social benefits to 43,800 residents of Torit
More than 80% of the town’s population will now have access to clean water with the newly rehabilitated and expanded water supply system across Torit Town.
Ambassador Sedat states that the German Government through its generous funding of 2 million USD has made possible a new system that will greatly boost the capacity of the water supply network in Torit.
“Access to clean and safe water is a fundamental human right and essential for development,” Amb. Sedat emphasized.
He adds that the inauguration of the new water supply system in Torit through German support underscores the power of collaboration among stakeholders in the water sector in South Sudan.

Amb. Christian reaffirms Germany’s unwavering commitment to supporting South Sudan’s peace process and long-term development.
UNICEF country representative , Hamida Ramadhani Lasseko thanked the government of Germany for funding the project that addresses the needs of people in Torit town.
Lasseko said that vulnerable communities across South Sudan will lose the fight against poverty and water-borne disease without the presence of clean and safe water.
“We are thrilled that 43,800 people, mainly women and children, will benefit from clean and safe water, leading to improved sanitation and hygiene at household levels, health facilities, and schools.
“This water project will provide and is already providing safe and sustainable water for more than 40,000 people here in Torit, and I want to thank the deputy governor and the government of Germany for making it possible to celebrate this inauguration day of Water supply system.”
She adds that the water supply system operates on solar power, making it environmentally friendly and more cost-effective compared to generator-powered systems.
She cited that using solar power reduces the operational cost of water production by half.
Meanwhile, the deputy governor of Eastern Equatoria State Mary Nadio Lodira thanks Germany and UNICEF for saving people from cholera and other waterborne diseases by expanding the clean water supply system in Torit.
“I want to first thank the government of Germany for responding into crisis that happened in 2018 here, it is the crises of cholera which killed a lot of people in result of that, it generated this facility we are seeing now. I also want to thank the UNICEF for putting a hand and entrusting the German Embassy to deliver this service to the people here.”
Deputy Governor calls on the Torit Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Company to start the installation of the water supply to the households in Torit.
UNICEF implemented the project in collaboration with the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, the State Government of Eastern Equatoria, and Torit Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Company, which has completed the Torit water supply system expansion.
The upgraded supply system of Torit includes two boreholes equipped with solar-powered submersible pumps, a 25-kilometre pipeline distribution network, and an additional 500 cubic meters of storage, increasing the total storage capacity by 50%.
The project also added 25 new water kiosks to the existing eight which will reach more people and shorten the distance to water collection points.
