The Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) has unveiled that it warded five scholarships yearly to the qualified students within the region and 20 South Sudanese benefited from the program.

This came during the 15th Annual conference of IUCEA held in Juba this week that focuses on Innovation Leadership and Governance approaches in Higher Education.

It brought together higher Education leaders, Policy Makers, partners, Vice-chancellors, and stakeholders with practitioners from different East African Community Member states.

The Executive Secretary for the Inter-University Council for East Africa Prof. Gaspard Banyankimbona said is managing five scholarships that exposed the member countries to a new education system.

“Through that scholarship program, we are exposing countries to a different education system. If a country like Burundi for example receives a student from South Sudan, then they will deal with his qualification. Once they managed to clear him and get the opportunity to study there, the country knows the education system of South Sudan,” he said.

Prof. Gaspard who is also the Minister of Education and Scientific Research in Burundi  stated that East Africa Community has also inter-governmental institutions memberships with more than 150 universities that will be implementing activities by the secretariat of the Council next year.

South Sudan National Ministry of Labor Hon. James Hoth Mai encouraged the academia to reconsider Universities curriculums.

He urged the Public and Private Universities to initiate research funding that will be supported by Rwanda, Uganda, and South Sudan.

Hon. James says such an initiative will make an impact on research in government service cluster priorities.

“You can do one research, bring researchers from Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and South Sudan who lead together and then do a big research that will have an impact instead of leaving it to individual University who will have no resources to do research,” Hoth emphasized.

The two-day IUCEA annual conference concluded on Thursday, 18th July 2024.
