The Catholic Bishop of Tombura-Yambio diocese; Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala has expressed deep concern that any extension to the current transitional government is an increase of people suffering in South Sudan.
Bishop says there is a need to conduct elections and citizens vote for their leaders who can provide basic needs that the current government failed to address.
The Bishop was responding to the question of the CRN journalist who currently has an exclusive interview with him on Wednesday 3rd July 2024.
Church leader calls for the government to be prepared for the people to have food and necessary support, the day they announce the extension, the next day market should be fair and things should be affordable to the common man.
Bishop stated that there is a need to elect a government that can work for the people and that “extension of the period is also an extension of the suffering of the people.”
“For the last four years, there has not been proper work in the country, no so much service has been done. Extension of the period is also an extension of the suffering of the people.” On the other hand, the extension is also good because it will give us humble time to prepare the people before the election comes.”
Bishop explained that people suffering due to economic hardship and citizens are going hungry in Juba and many parts of the country.
“If you’re extending that period there must be promise that the market will change tomorrow, people will have basics to feed on and necessary services they need for themselves,” he said.
South Sudan’s government is yet to decide on whether to conduct an election in December or extend the current period again.
Earlier this week, news circulated on social media allegedly that the government extended the period for 24 months, a claimed denied by the Minister of Petroleum.
