The Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA), an advocacy body, is urging the government to ensure freedom of speech as the country prepares for polls in December 2024.
The Executive Director of the Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) and Chairperson of the Civil Society Coalition on Defense of Civic Space (CSCDCS) Ter Manyang Gatwech issued a press statement on Friday, April 5, 2024.
The advocacy group said the Government should uphold the legal frameworks in the country, particularly Article 25(1) of The Transitional Constitution 2011 (as amended), which guarantees the right to freedom of assembly and association as a fundamental right for all citizens.
The 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, clearly outline the rights that belong to every person on Earth.
The CPA said it’s deeply concerned about the shrinking civic space in the country in recent weeks, which according to them, is worrying many citizens.
Chairperson of Civil Society Coalition on Defense of Civic Space said South Sudan should consider the 258 recommendations of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) and make necessary revisions.
The Coalition also said, that from 2021 to 2024, CPA has observed serious violations of human rights and abuses citing the arrest of former Juba City Council Mayor Kalisto Ladu, as one of those.
It said In 2021, five South Sudanese activists went into exile due to a call for protest on August 30th. In 2022, eight journalists and one activist were detained by the NSS. In 2023, six journalists working for SSBC were affected.
