South Sudanese refugees accused of communal violence in Uganda are expected to appear in court. The 21 suspects, including juveniles, have had their files prepared to face court proceedings following a clash among Nuer sub-clans in the Palabek refugee camp.
Ugandan Media reported that the Aswa East Regional Police Commander, ACP Anatoli Katungwesi has confirmed a total of 21 men, among them are South Sudanese refugees who were earlier arrested at Palabek Settlement Camp in Lamwo District.
Police said, 77 South Sudanese refugees have been arrested and some were found without refugee status and recommended a general verification at the camp.
This came following the violence in the camp that left 3 people dead between the Fangak youth and those of the Mayom communities last month. The motive of fighting remains unclear as Police could reveal full details of their investigation.
ACP Anatoli Katungwesi revealed that the majority of those arrested were youth, and some were not registered refugees within Palabek Settlement Camp but they reportedly hailed from Kiryadongo and Adjumani refugee camps respectively.
Lamwo District Residence District Commissioner, Oceng Geoffrey Osborne earlier, together with the refugee welfare committees from 74 blocks in the settlement camp convened a meeting and established zonal security committees.
The committee tasks to address and report any threats of clashes. Their mandate includes preventing further internal conflicts and attacks within the refugee community in Palabek.
