Environmentalist urge university to suspend lectures citing heat waves

The Assistant Director for Safety, Directorate of Engineering and Construction Management, safety office at the University of Juba, Lual Akook Agak is calling for the temporary suspension of lectures except evening classes due to hot weather.

This came after a precautionary measures press statement on 15th March 2024 following the increase of heat waves in the Country.

According to the meteorological agency, heat will persist for 15 days and nights. Experts advised the public on adaptation strategies in climate change resilient practices.

Akook said Juba and most parts of South Sudan are experiencing extreme heat, between 41 – 45 degrees Celsius, because of what he refers to as the “greenhouse effect.”

“I advise the University of Juba administration to suspend lectures except evening classes for this forecasted period of heat wave.”

He said this lethal weather condition is hard on children, elderly or seniors, and those with chronic health conditions.

According to him, the public should take the Safety Units for possible adaptation to this prevailing climatic condition.

In another statement seen on Thursday 14h March 2024, the Ministry of Environment & Forestry through the office of the Undersecretary, Joseph Africano Bartel also advised schools and facilities without cooling systems to close If the high temperatures persist, until cooler temperatures return.

These adaptation strategies include; drinking more water to stay hydrated, avoiding alcoholic and caffeinated drinks during this time, taking cool showers frequently, and. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables which have more water.

They also advised the public to reduce the intake of protein-rich food (red meat) to cut metabolic heat, Wear lightweight and colored clothing.

The authorities further urged the civil population to stay indoors as much as possible avoid direct sunlight and check on those most at-risk including infants, young children, and older adults several times a day.
