The Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) is calling on the government to invite the African Union to form a Hybrid Court for South Sudan.
The Executive Director of CPA Ter Manyang Gatwech questioned why the establishment of the Hybrid Court was delayed.
The Activist mentioned that such a Court is crucial to reward the victim of the Conflict.
The Hybrid Court for South Sudan is an AU-led hybrid court which will have the mandate to investigate and prosecute individuals bearing the responsibility for the serious crimes committed since 15 December 2013 in South Sudan
This includes the deliberate killing of civilians, rape, and other sexual violence
The call was made during a two-day workshop held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on November 6th-8th, 2023, which brought participants officials from AU, Civil Society leaders, academicians, and foreign embassies.
The aim of the workshop was to equip participants with the knowledge and understanding of how the African Union functions.
Mr. Manyang said the processes are judicial and non-judicial mechanisms on truth-seeking, prosecution initiatives, reparations, and various measures to prevent the recurrence of human rights violations.
In the response, Doctor. Ikubaje John Gbodi, the head of coordinator Human Rights and Transitional Justice AU expressed readiness to visit South Sudan and engage the stakeholders in this process.
Transitional Justice (TJ) aims to provide recognition, enhance the trust of individuals in the state institutions, reinforce respect for human rights, and promote the rule of law, as a step towards reconciliation and the prevention of new violations, “Ikubaje stated.”
The decision to establish the Hybrid Court was taken through the 2015 peace agreement signed by the Government of South Sudan and the SPLM in Opposition.
