South Sudan Disarmament Demobilization Commission together with United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) United Nation Mission In South Sudan (UNMISS) with funding from France Government launched the community violence reduction pilot project in Wau, Western Bahr El Ghazal state at the state Secretariat.
Chairperson of Disarmament Demobilization and Reintegration Commission (DDR) Commission Ayuen Alier said that the project is a milestone for sustainable peace in South Sudan in a sense that it engages everyone in the community to find solutions to the problem without use of violence.
Ayuen Alier appreciated the French Government for funding this pilot project together with other UN agencies.
He said that it is one of the tools that is used by DDR which involve small scale projects that will target youth, women and ex-combatants.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Peace Building Pia Philip Michael said that the Community Violence Reduction project is developmental because it advocates for a nonviolent approach to solving issues in the community.
The representative of state Government Elia Kamilo Dimo appreciated the leadership of DDR commission for choosing Western Bahr El Ghazal as one of the states to implement this project.
He encouraged the implementing partners to design a local approach to implement the pilot project to suit the local context of the people of Western Bahr el Ghazal state.
The project is a collaboration among South Sudan DDR commission, UNMISS, UNDP funded by France Government and will be implemented by Solidarity Ministries Africa for Reconciliation and Development.
The project will last for 15 Months and will target 500 beneficiaries with 250 beneficiaries being Ex- combatant while others are from community members.
