South Sudan agree with Kenya to establish fiber optic cable

South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit and his counterpart William Ruto of Kenya have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a fiber optic cable along the Eldoret-Juba Road.

The move is to enhance connectivity between the two countries. A fiber-optic cable, also known as an optical-fibber cable is a long-distance telecommunication that provides high-speed data connection.

On Saturday President Kiir visited Nairobi and discussed a joint infrastructure project to enhance regional cooperation and expand bilateral ties in areas of trade, Investment.

According to the statement from President’s Office, Kiir, and Ruto deliberated on implementing the infrastructural projects under the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport Corridor project, a pending task since 2016.

The Project focuses on interconnecting the East African countries of Kenya, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Uganda amongst others.

Kenya is spearheading the implementation of this Project which is expected to strengthen the position of East Africa as a continental gateway and transport and logistics hub in the region to facilitate trade, promote regional economic integration.

The infrastructure project is worth nearly two million US dollars signed by Infrastructure Project Preparation Facility (NEPAD -IPPF), a multi-donor trust fund under African Development Bank.

The two leaders also discussed peace in the region, with a focus on de-escalation of the armed conflict in Sudan.

President Kiir and the accompanying delegation returned to Juba the same day.
