The newly appointed head of the Sudan Sovereign Council, Malik Agar Eyre who replaced Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo has called for an end to the raging conflict in his country.
Malik Agar Eyre the current Chairman of SPLM-North was brought to the government of Sudan through the Juba Peace Agreement signed last year.
It’s nearly two months since the war erupted in Sudan between the allies of General Abdel Fattah al Burhan commander of Sudan Army Forces and his rival Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo leader of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Mr. Agar met with President Kiir in Juba on Monday after being dispatched by General Abdel Fattah al Burhan to discuss bilateral ties.
While speaking to the media, the newly appointed Chairman of SPLM-North (Agar faction) Malik Agar Eyre has described the war in Sudan as “a senseless war.”
Agar said it’s a collective responsibility of both the two leaders and peace partners to reach a consensus in bringing to an end the war in Sudan.
“It is our duty to stop the war in Sudan and reach logical solutions through dialogue.”
Following his appointment on Friday last week, General Agar said, he is not filling a position, and not siding with any party other than Sudan and the interest of its citizens.
“I accepted the assignment to assume the position of Vice President of the Sovereign Council, not as a substitute for anyone, and not as siding with any party other than Sudan and the interest of its citizens first and foremost.”
He reaffirmed support for President Kiir’s efforts in persuading the warring parties to settle their disputes through dialogue, noting that Juba remains an ideal city for Sudanese peace talks.
For his part, President Salva Kiir Mayardit has reiterated his commitment to the restoration of peace and stability in Sudan.
The Presidential Advisor on National Security Affairs, Tut Gatluak Manime said, President Kiir is taking all necessary steps to ensure that the conflict in Sudan comes to a comprehensive end.
An armed conflict between rival factions of the military government of Sudan began on 15 April 2023, when clashes broke out in cities, with the fighting concentrated around the capital city of Khartoum and the Darfur region.
