The Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) Chairperson, Rt. Gen. Charles Tai Gituai has corned that most provisions in Roadmap remain behind schedules.

He says parties should demonstrate commitment to delivering the transition in time not simply by ward.

This came during RJMEC held its plenary meeting on Thursday.

“A lot of work remains to be done if the roadmap timelines are to be adhered to as promised, the reconstituted transition government of national unity (RTGoNU) should demonstrate in action its commitment to deliver the transition in time not simply by word.

This requires a solid commitment for resources to implement the agreement.”

The peace monitoring body highlighted their responsibility to keep peace on track and remind the parties of their mandate to implement the agreement in later and spirit.

“As the monitoring body, it is our responsibility to keep track of these timelines and to constantly remind the RTGoNU and parties represented here, of their mandate and urgent responsibility, to expedite the implementation of the peace Agreement in letter and spirit.”

He welcomes the 28th RJMEC meeting as they enter the second of the 24-month extended Transitional Period as per the RTGoNU Roadmap; with elections expected to be conducted in December 2024.

RJMEC Chairperson states that the slow peace implementation is mandatory for them to redouble their efforts.

“Finally, forced with the current setbacks and the slow Pace of implementation, it is an obligation upon us to redouble our efforts.”

He encourages RTGoNU TO accelerate the pace of implementation going forward in order to provide impetus to the pace process.

The Minister of Information, Michael Makuei Lueth who presented a progress report says the committee for implementation of the agreement with the parties and the ministry of justice is reconstituting the national constitutional commission.

“The high-level standing committee for the implementation of the agreement comprising of representatives of the parties to the agreement is reconstituting the national constitutional review commission.”

Makuei says after reconstituting the national commissions, other various organs related to the constitutional-making process will imminently be established and operationalized.

Lueth believes that the permeant constitution of the Republic of South Sudan can be delivered in a shorter time because all the documents of the process are available.

He added that a high-level standing committee is reconstituting the political parties’ council to open ways for the political parties to start registration and begin their political work in preparation for elections.
