South Sudan is hosting a 3-day international conference on women’s transformational leadership.
The goal is to create space for women leaders to reflect on their leadership journeys as they share perspectives and recommendations on the role of women in peacebuilding.
The Conference dubbed “Guwa Tamara-Strength of a woman” started on Monday 13th and is expected to end on Wednesday 15th of February 2023.
More than 400 women leaders, entrepreneurs, UN and Government officials in the East Africa region are participating.
The conference was officiated by President Salva Kiir Mayardit who encouraged the people to work for inclusive society.
“Let us keep working towards a better day for women and girls, let us join hands to promote the mission of gender equality, and engage in activities to be champions in these efforts.” President Kirr emphasized.
The president reaffirms the government’s commitment to continue addressing challenges affecting women by working hard to empower them in this country
He urges the political parties to the peace agreement as they wait to implement the remaining tasks, to prioritize the delivery of development, and building capacity, and shows the freedom of human rights for women and all citizens.
Kiir urged the women leaders to eco their voices to inspire the next generation of women leaders to support peace, unity, and equal opportunity for all.
Vice president, and Chair for Gender and Youth cluster, Rebecca Nyadeng says, she believes the conference is going to tackle Gender equality through women’s empowerment.
“Among many issues that this international conference aims to address is a topic that has always been at the top of my agenda and closes to my heart. Gender equality through women’s economic empowerment. If we do not empower our women economically, they will never go anywhere because we (women) are born to look into the pocket of our husbands.” Nyandeng explained.
South Sudan Minister of Gender, Child and social welfare, Ayaa Benjamin Awerile, says the participants will deliberate on issues of employing transformational leadership, Climate change and women’s leadership in civil societies among others.
“Our expectations are, the lesson learned on women peace and security and the gain of women’s movement and leaders globally shared to address the unequal power relationship between men and women to create a context where women are free and actively involved in the development of their communities and country.” She elaborated.
The government has commanded donor communities for their efforts towards women empowerment and capacity building and calls them to remain positive toward such goals
