Gov’t pledge 10 million SSP to support new administration of Torit Diocese

The South Sudan government has promised to pay 10 million South Sudanese Pound and a land Cruiser V6 vehicle to support the new administration of Torit Catholic Diocese.

The grant was announced by the Speaker of Transitional National Legislative Assembly, Jemma Nunu Kumba on Sunday.

In November last year, the President Salva Kiir donated 15 million Pound and a land cruiser to the church during centenary celebration in Torit.

Nunu Kumba said the government acknowledges the contribution of the Church towards peace in South Sudan since liberation.

“As I came, the president also gave his message in term of support, for the office of the new Bishop, as I go back to Juba, from the office of the president, we are going to send a Land cruiser V6 and 10 million SSP. We need to support the Church because their salaries come from us. We need to support the church because we (Government) need the support of the Church so that they continue doing the good work they have been doing for us,” she said.

Kumba calls for more support from the South Sudan Council of Churches to the Government to achieve ever lasting peace.

The Eastern Equatoria State Governor Luis Lobong Lojore has promised to work with new Bishop of Torit Catholic Diocese.

He urges citizen to spread the rightful message of peace and self-reliance.

This came during the ordination and consecration ceremony of Bishop Emmanuel Bernardino Lowi over the weekend.

The occasion was attended by the Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya and South Sudan Bert van Megen and other senior religious leaders. He reaffirmed the plan visit of His Holiness Pope Francis to South Sudan next month.

Thousands of Christians, local residents and government officials witnessed the historic event.

The newly ordained Bishop, Emmanuel Bernardino Lowi became the 4th Bishop to take charge of Torit Diocese in Eastern Equatoria.
