The South Sudan women’s bloc has called on the President to appoint a woman in the position of Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management.

The Chairperson of the South Sudan Women’s Bloc, Mary Amer Manyok urges President Salva Kiir to reconsider the 35% women’s Affirmative Action stated in the agreement.

This came after the President sacked the Minister of Humanitarians Affairs, Peter Mayen Majongdit in November.

Amer says the chance should be given to a woman from other Political Parties. She reminded the President that women’s representation is required in the 2018 Revitalised Agreement on Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan.

“We call upon the government of South Sudan led by President Salva Kiir to reconsider the 35% Women Affirmative Action and give a woman the chance to represent OPP in regard to the position of Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs,” Amer said.

The women says gender equality could strengthen the economy and provide an exclusive system of good governance in the country.

Amer strongly believes that South Sudan will become democratic only if human rights and the fundamental rights of women are respected.

She says South Sudanese women have declared their readiness to stand in solidarity with the government of South Sudan and their fellow women in the government.

“We strongly believe that South Sudan is a liberal democratic state where human rights and rights of women are respected,” Amer stated.

Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs is run without Minister after Hon. Peter Mayen Majongdit was relieved by the President without an immediate replacement.
