The head of the United Nations Food and Agriculture organization (FAO) has reiterated its commitment to work with South Sudan in the fight against hunger.

This came during the commemoration of World Food Day on 16th of October under the theme “Leave No One Behind.”

The day was dedicated to increasing public awareness on global food challenges. It’s to showcase national and international solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty.

In South Sudan, the national celebrations were organized on Tuesday18 October in Rumbek.

FAO Country Director, Meshack Malo, says his organisation is committed to supporting the South Sudanese people to become food secure.

“We want to commit to accompanying the people of South Sudan in supporting you to ensure there is food security. We are committed to being with the people of Lakes and ensuring you achieve your ambition of food security,” said Malo.

The UN World Food Program’s Acting Country Director, Adeyinka Badejo, recognizes the suffering of people who have no food to eat.

She says there are 800 million people in the world that have no food including 7 million in South Sudan.“This is a celebration of life because, without food, there is no life.”

Lakes state governor Hon. Rin Tueny Mabor says the state policy to have food security by 2024 will be achieved. Peace will be maintained to ensure citizens embark on agriculture.

“We prioritize agriculture with the aim to encourage farmers to focus on large-scale food production for not only home consumption but for sale. This will increase their income level to improve their living condition and eradicate poverty,” Ron said.

The Governor is calling on partners to support his policy of Lakes state food security by providing quality seeds for better production.

National Government and the donor community attended the celebration of the World food day event in Rumbek in Lakes state.
