Relief and rehabilitation commission focal person in Mogala Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp reported that over 23 thousand one hundred and ninety-five of nearly forty thousand, IDPs are not benefiting from the food aid provided by humanitarian agency, World Food Program.
Mongala IDP camp is situated in North east of Juba, approximately 76Kms along Juba-Bor Road with over 39 thousand internally displaced persons mostly from Jonglei state who flee their areas due to flooding in 2019.
According to the RRC focal person, Mr. Gabriel Juac, the World food program registered only 16 thousand, one hundred and fifty-six beneficiaries. But nearly 30 thousnad do not regstered.
He says the targeted benefeciaries were to receive the relief food aid in a period of 8 months but did not fully materialize except for the rolled-out to four months food ratio.
“They were targeting only 16,156 beneficiaries who were been registered and they were given ratio card for almost 4 months, the humanitarian agencies had promised that they are going to give food for 8 months but they failed to implement, they only gave out four months food ratio to the 16,156 beneficiaries,” Gabriel explained.
Gabriel Juac said that life is so distressing in Magala IDP camp due to inadequate clean water, Lack of food, high cost of living, and health-related issues among other challenges.
He added that some people harvest wild leaves; others resort to charcoal burning, meanwhile, others do small-income farming, and selling of greens on the roadside to feed their families.
“When I came here, I found some people are collecting leaves from the trees in the bush, especially leaves of the trees, some of them survive through their relatives who have something in their hands and well-wishers.” Gabriel Narrates.
The IDPs camp women leader, Mrs. Alikiri John Mayen said, there is no proper maternity ward to attend to women in labor pain, especially in times of birth.
“Women here are giving birth under trees, we don’t have gloves and anything that helps us while delivering babies, if a woman is giving birth, we just receive the babies with our bare hands and God will help. We are just surviving by God’s grace,” said.
The relief agency is calling humaniterains organization to intervene by improviding food aid, clean water, trauma healing and counseling centers, and loan system to empower the displaced persons.
He also urged the World Food porgram to initiate household head count for overall population in Mangala IDPs camp as soon as possible.
The Mongalla IDP Camp was established in June 2020, which hosts 11,293 individuals who were displaced by flooding in June 2020 but the population later increased to 39 thousand.
