The United Kingdom Special envoy to Sudan and South Sudan expressed deep concern about the slow implementation of the revitalized peace agreement signed in 2018.
Amb. Robart Fairweather says the necessity for more time to fulfill the peace agreement is the result of choices taken by the leaders in the past, but there is no speed behind the implementation.
“We have not seen the momentum or the speed behind the implementation of the peace agreement,” he said.
Robart also called the parties to avail a unified roadmap that will give details of what actions will be taken or needed to extend the transitional period.
He says any extension this time must be supported by detailed activities with specific actions the unity the government will do in each chapter of the agreement.
“We can’t see an open-handed extension. It must be detailed, and it should explain the specific actions that will be taken under each chapter of the agreement and which order they will be taken,”
The UK diplomat appealed to the leaders a need for political will to ensure South Sudan achieves sustainable peace.
The special envoy said he came to South Sudan to discuss peace implementation with parties, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to get their views on the peace in the country.
