The chief Imehejek Payam of Lopa/Lafon County in Eastern Equatoria State is calling for humanitarian aid to the wildfire-affected victims in Lopit area.

Chief Robert Ojok says the affected people are in dire need of food and non-food items, Radio Emmanuel reported.

He made the call after wildfire that consumed about three household properties into ashes in different villages of Imehejek, Logonowati and Longiro in Lopit area.

Ojok says the fire was set by young children of less than five years with the latest incident on the 31st January 2022.

“All the properties got burned in the house nothing was rescued when the youth came for rescue the fire was so fierce, up to now there is no help to the people may be if they got settle at someone home to help them but what are they going to eat there because even gardens were destroyed by locust so there is little food for the people here. The issue of locust no one has responded to that now it is houses getting burn we don’t know if there will be any assistance? I am calling for help to these people before the rainy season so that they can construct some small tukuls”, he asks.

Chief Ojok says there is need for support to the whole community with food assistance because of poor harvest due to locust presence

He advises parents not to allow children to be sent to collect fire from the neighbours to avoid such incidences.

“What should be done is that this children including the elder people, they should not put fire in open place anyhow, because this fire is very dangerous, they should not allow children to carry fire this is what I can tell them”, the chief advises.

Chief Robert Ojok was talking to Radio Emmanuel in a telephone interview from Imehejek.
