UN Human Rights Council to examine South Sudan’s human rights record

Universal Periodic Review Working Group of the UN Human Rights Council will examine South Sudan’s human rights record for the third time on Monday, 31 January 2022.

UN Human Rights Council in a statement CRN got on Thursday said the event is expected to take place during its 40th session from 24 January to 3 February, which marks the end of the UPR third cycle.

It disclosed that South Sudan’s first and second Universal Periodic Reviews took place in May 2011 and November 2016, respectively.

It said the reviews are based on national report, information contained in the reports of independent human rights experts and groups known as the Special Procedures, human rights treaty bodies, and other UN entities.

The reviews are also based on information provided by other stakeholders including national human rights institutions, regional organizations and civil society groups.

During the third Universal Periodic Review cycle, States are again expected to spell out steps they took to implement recommendations posed during their previous reviews which they committed to follow-up.

The nations are also expected to highlight recent human rights developments in the country.

The delegation of South Sudan will be led by Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Justice Ruben Madol Arol.

The Universal Periodic Review Working Group is scheduled to adopt the recommendations made to South Sudan on  February 3, 2022.
