Prepare land early to plant their crops on time to realize a better yield this year, Anna Itwari Felix Director-General in Eastern Equatoria State Ministry of Agriculture advises citizens.
She says when crops are planted on time; there is a high chance to realize good yield since the crops will accumulate rainfall to support their growth, Radio Emmanuel reported.
“This year we will advise that we prepare our lands very early and then we grow crops so that all the cumulative rainfall can be received by the crops to grow, so the food insecurity last year, we don’t expect a lot of food this time round, we are going to have food shortages and the prices might go up. We are actually informing people that there is climate change effects that is what is happening and it is a continuous process we should be prepared to live with it”, the Director-general advises.
The official says early land preparation will help people cope up with climate change and be food secure.
She urges farmers groups to embark on local seed production to avoid importing seeds which may fail to germinate due variation in the weather conditions or lifelessness of the seeds.
“we are going to embark on seed production because we will love to have seed producers within Eastern Equatoria State, so that we don’t import seeds throughout our lives, we want seeds to be grown here, we’ll process them from here, if possible we well also export in export in the future, that is our focus. So we can have farmers group who want to embark on seed production so that we don’t wait for seeds to come from outside, sometimes they fail to germinate, seeds in our environment will do much better”, Itwari she tell farmers.
