INTERSOS WASH Engineer has called on the community of Torit to take the responsibility and good care of the water points.

Engineer Rosier Rosemary made this statement after conducting three day training to the Hand Pump Mechanics-HPM in Torit.

Rosemary says the training is aimed at equipping the community members with the basic knowledge and skills of boreholes repair.

“The major objective of the training is to enhance the community members with the basic skills of how to repair the Hand pump Boreholes in the community. This came up after doing assessment in the different part of (Torit) county and as per our project target we were able to come up with 18 selected boreholes in the county. And so we selected at least one participant per borehole. It is the responsibility of the whole community to take care of the boreholes; one is keeping it clean all the time since access to clean water is our major target in this project”.

Participant’s representative, Agura Peter believes that the training has equipped them a lot and he’s now able to serve the community in case of breakdown of boreholes.

“We really benefited a lot, first of all we have been trained about the tools of Hand Pump Mechanic, and then we were told on how to use those tools and then we went to the field and we applied what was taught to us and we really succeed”.

Peter mentions that as a mechanic, they face a lot of challenges especially in the line of acquiring spare parts to fix the water point.

“The tools are already there but the spare part is the most challenging. If the boreholes broke down and then to be repaired sometime is also a problem, you may find that the community sometime will not be able to get money so that they will be able to buy the spare parts. But we are trying sometime to contact if the Ministry can help”.
