Eastern Equatoria State Legislative Assembly has not met the 35 percent affirmative action, says United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS Torit Head Field office.

Caroline Waudo says, out of ninety two state members of parliament, only twenty nine are women and sixty three are men.

“I would like to congratulate the President of the Republic of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, for the reconstitution and appointment of the speaker and the members of the Eastern Equatoria Legislative Assembly which has 92 members, 29 are women, 63 are men. UN as peace partner in the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement, will work together with the state members of parliament to disseminate the peace agreement in their constituency and to build their capacity as members of parliament, however, we are concern that the reconstitution members of Eastern Equatoria Legislative Assembly did not meet 35% affirmative action”.

Waudo says UN will guarantee that the 35 percent affirmative action is met at all government levels.

“27 percent women were appointed and there is need for women to participate 35%. So as the UN we will continue to work with all the institutions to ensure that the 35% is made in all the government institutions and also that women contribute meaningfully to nation building”.

On 17th November 22, 2021, a republican decree was issued for the Reconstitution and Appointment of the Speaker and Eastern Equatoria State Members of Legislative Assembly, 2021.
