Eastern Equatoria State Police spokesperson, Major Justine Kleopas Takuru,
cautions cyclists especially the Boda-Boda riders to control their speed while in town
to avoid accidents.
Radio Emmanuel quoted him saying within two weeks since the road is cleared they
have so far received seven cases of accidents due to over speeding.
“Now the road in Torit is cleared and it is smooth, but these days we already got
almost six to seven accidents, children are hit with bikes and people ride at high
speed on the road. Even in schools, children should not be left out, keep them and
let the relatives be the one to come and take them. I would like to say the Boda-Boda
outside there to get me right, people these road when you get the permit know the
citizens on the roads are your mother, your father, your sister, your brother and your
child, go slow, do not over speed people should not over speed, you have to go
slow, when you go slow, you will reach where you are going to”, the spokesperson.
Major Kleopas also urges citizens to always be careful when crossing the roads by
looking left and right since there are no road signs to indicate where pedestrians and
school children to cross.
“People should take care, when you are on the road, walk from the side, do not
move in the middle of the road, that is unlawful, people like walking from the middle
of the road, the citizens should be careful, if you want to cross the road, you have to
look left and right because we don’t have the road signs here, in front the schools
also look left and right before crossing, more especially the elderly ones, you don’t
need to cross the road just like that, look left and right, prevention is better than
cure”, he cautions.
Torit-Juba road is under construction which begun last year by ARC Construction
Company and the work will proceed to Nadapal connecting South Sudan to Kenya.
