South Sudan UN Refugee Agency UNHCR will on Wednesday celebrate 70 years of protecting people forced to flee

The event on the nationality documentation and reduction of the risk of statelessness in South Sudan is part of the 7th anniversary of the “I Belong Campaign to End Statelessness 2014-2024”.

The aim is to raise awareness about the importance of nationality documentation and the risk of Statelessness in South Sudan.

The event will start as the first step in UNHCR advocacy for the accession of both Statelessness Conventions by South Sudan.

It is time to also sensitize the greater public on the importance of Nationality Documentation in the country and the role that it plays in the eradication of statelessness.

The event aims to create a better awareness of the subject by different stakeholders, make nationality documentation for all a priority for the government and encourage the accession of both conventions by the Revitalized National Legislative Assembly.

Different South Sudanese stakeholders will next week discuss about the issue in roundtables.

UNHCR says since the beginning of I belong campaign, political will and momentum to take statelessness by the government and other partners have been growing.
