Eastern Equatoria Governor Louis Lobong Lojore is urging partners to help build and extend more meat markets in the other county headquarters in the state.

He during the inauguration of Torit meat market, called on FAO to construct a meat market in Kapoeta because they are lacking proper space, Radio Emmanuel reported.

“The consumption of meat in Kapoeta compared to other places is more and the way they are selling it is not proper, so there it requires more than one because even twenty bulls, places like this cannot accommodate. Towns are growing in Eastern Equatoria, if you get the funding we need in each county, headquarters of each county to have at least one, people this is development, building like this is a development, from small will grow bigger”, the governor admitted.

State Minister of Animal Resources, Fisheries and Tourism, Angelo William Geri, congratulated FAO for the initiate because now the meat market will provide quality meat to the local population.

“Before this launch, the structure which was standing here was in a tearing condition and a persistence source of contamination of meat from Torit aperture after being passed by competent authorities for human consumption. But today with the help of FAO and the Ministry of Animal Resources, this facility has passed the hazard analysis acceptable control. So the meat we are going to consume from here is to the standard that is satisfied by hygiene authority”, Geri acknowledged.

National Minister of Livestock and Fisheries Onyoti Adigo appealed to cattle owners to keep their livestock in good condition to produce quality meat and milk.

“We are not keeping our cattle in good health, there is too much movement, cattle move from one place to another, the cattle will be tired, for this reasons our cattle are thin without good meat, no milk, but if we keep the cattle in one place and feed them from one place they will get fat and produce enough meat and we will earn more money, because it is staying in one place and eat from one place, we should bring good cattle to produce to change the breeds of our cattle”, he advised.

FAO representative Meshack Malo discloses that they will work hand in hand with Eastern Equatoria State to ensure it becomes food secure to produce enough foods.

“Eastern Equatoria is one of the states that is very close to the heart of the Food and Agricultural Organization because we believe that this state can do a lot to change the chance of food and nutrition in South Sudan and even in our discussion as Food and Agriculture we got two main objectives that we want to work together with the people of Eastern Equatoria, first is that we want Eastern Equatoria to be food secure, when we produce enough food for ourselves, the second area, that is why the Food and Agriculture Organization we are putting much effort in this market, we are going to open our FAO office in Kapoeta”, he explained.

The officials were speaking during the inauguration ceremony of Torit meat market on Tuesday.
