The Midwife in-charge of Maternity Ward in Torit State Hospital calls on pregnant mothers to report early to the facility as soon as they feel labour pain.

Oholong Jacob cautions expectant mothers against taking advantage of their past experience of giving birth without complications, Radio Emmanuel reports.

Oholong says their past experiences of safe delivery should not be an excuse of late reporting to the hospital.

The call came after a newborn baby died of prolonged labour which prompted a thirty year old man to accuse the hospital of killing the new baby intentionally.

The most important things it is actually you the mothers to help us to do our best because a time people come to the hospital late, don’t assume that the first delivery was normal, everything is going to be normal so when you assume when they bring you at the late hours with the complication so what we are going to do may either save your life and the baby would go so but at our level we need to see everybody is happy the baby should be alive and the mother should be alive as well i’m encouraging them actually to come to the hospital earlier not you come when the baby is about to come so we may not know exactly what will happen

The midwife says late reporting to the hospital during labour pain can lead to complications or even death.

Major Justin Keleopas Takuru confirms that he received a report about the death of the child from the State Hospital, and the case has been reported to police.

This happen on the 25th March, one of the person came and reported to us here call Onubi Joseph 32 year old, is also a soldier working in the department of immigration, he came and reported that his wife gave birth in the hospital, when the child was given birth the child was taken to the Oxygen room, and the wife was taken to the ward when he was around, he said the doctor told him to bring three syringes of 5mm, but he did not ask what the syringes is for, when he ask is there anything wrong? They said no, when he went home, at around 9pm, he received a call that the child is dead, then he was very angry on the doctors saying if there was something, they were supposed to inform him that the child health is not okay and the child is in the oxygen room//

Prolonged labour is both risky for the mother and child, including oxygen deprivation, permanent injury, and trauma in the child, and haemorrhaging and infection in the mother.

The speakers made the statement to Radio Emmanuel in an exclusive interview
