A community leader has reported that a four-month-old child in odikolong residential area of Torit County lost life due to parental negligence.

The sub-chief of the area Rose Iwawa said on Wednesday evening the mother to the child consumed a lot of alcohol and went asleep till morning, Radio Emmanuel reported

She says it is suspected the child suffocated on bed when his mother could not attend to the infant when the child was crying.

‘This woman had been taking alcohol and she went home and sleep and according to the statement, the child had been crying and nobody was able to rescue the child from what happened because the child was crying the whole night in the morning. The neighbour went to confirm what happened, but unfortunately she found the child is no longer breathing and sleeping on his stomach facing the ground even the mother got surprise about what happened this is because of the alcohol the mother had taken and that is how the child met his death and he was buried this morning the child died when the father is still in the village’, she explained

Sub-chief Iwawa advised breastfeeding mothers not to involve in alcohol consumption when having young children.

‘You see what has happened; this is a shame to all mothers in this world because if one onion is rotten it can spoil the rest too. So my advice to all mothers, you should leave the behaviours of drinking alcohol especially the ones who have children in their hands. Nobody knows if you will sleep and you don’t know whether the child is crying or not just like what happened to us now’, she pleaded.

The police spokesperson Major Justin Cleophas Takuru told Radio Emmanuel in a telephone call that the case was not been reported to them.
