Lakes State Governor Makur Kulang Liei ordered traditional chiefs to report registration and collection of unauthorized firearms from hands of civilians in ten days.

After the meeting with chiefs on Sunday in Rumbek, Governor Makur said they have agreed to remove guns from the youth.

He said the registration of the guns is to differentiate those who reported their guns with those who are not complying with the disarmament policy.

Chiefs’ Representative Madut Buoi urged his colleagues to cooperate with the state government in removing guns from the armed young people.

Lakes State has been under communal conflicts fuelled by proliferation of firearms in the hands of civilians since 2003.
