The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization or FAO in South Sudan says buying seeds locally grown is more expensive than those from other countries.

FAO representative in South Sudan, Meshack Malo told journalists on Monday that most farmers in the country grow grains and intend to sell them as a seed which affects the quality of seeds.

He said the UN agriculture agency bought nearly two million kilograms of seeds from local farmers despite the poor quality.

Malo said FAO will work with local farmers to improve the quality of seeds in the country.

The official spoke during the launch of a new project that seeks to promote backyard farming in urban centers.
