The European Union or EU has appealed to South Sudan leadership to swiftly agree and complete the state governors and other political nominations, ensuring the thirty-five percent women representation in public office.
EU in a statement CRN got, stressed that the gaps in national and local governance systems are hampering conflict resolution efforts in the country.
It said it is important to view the need for a whole society’s effort in the containment of the COVID-19 pandemic.
‘In line with the declaration of the IGAD Council of Ministers on 23 April, which deadlines have unfortunately not been respected by the South Sudanese parties, a swift agreement on and completion of state governorships and other political nominations are vital, as is ensuring women represent 35% of those in public office’, EU said.
It reiterated that the perpetuation of violence leading to a high number of fatalities, forced displacement, sexual, gender-based violence and other human rights abuses must stop.
EU said the political and inter-communal violence in Jonglei, Lakes, Warrap, Central Equatoria and other parts of the country is of great concern.
It regretted that humanitarian workers have been killed due to the conflicts and the situation is hampering the delivery of aid in areas affected by severe food insecurity and recurrent natural disasters.
EU noted that the regrettable stopping of the implementation of the peace deal and the high proliferation of arms in the country worsened the situation.
It welcomed UN Security Council recently renewed sanctions, including arms embargo on South Sudan.
EU called on actors to the peace agreement including parties to the Rome Declaration to respect the ceasefire.
