Authorities in Torit County have confirmed that Mairo C residential area is now a free open defecation area.

This came during their verification visit on Friday to the area and discovered more than 180 households have started using pit latrines, Radio Emmanuel reported.

The project is implemented by INTERSOS, an Italian humanitarian organization supported by UNICEF.

INTERSOS hygiene officer Mikeline Ojaba through Radio Emmanuel hailed Mairo C residents for their commitment, advising other areas to follow suit.

She said her organization is supporting up to 20 villages in Torit and Magwi Counties.

Chief of Mairo residential area in Torit town, Joseph Lonuha Tiberious, said having a pit latrine will save communities from several diseases.

Every community should embark on digging latrines to guarantee better sanitation, he advised.
