Médecins Sans Frontières or MSF confirms the death of its staff and two others injured during intense fighting that erupted over the weekend in Pieri, a town in Jonglei State.

In a statement by the agency, MSF Deputy Head of Mission in South Sudan Steve MacKay expresses his deepest sympathy and condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the staff and all those affected.

He condemns in the strongest terms possible the outrageous acts of inter communal violence that has left dozens seriously wounded, and fear many more may be dead.

Fighting erupted in the area around Pieri in the early morning of Saturday, May16.

Over 50 people were wounded including two MSF staffs that were brought to the MSF hospital in Lankien, approximately 50 kilometres north of Pieri, where they now receive treatment.

As a result of this act of violence, MSF has been forced to suspend medical activities in Pieri until they receive reassurances for safety of their staff.

MSF remains committed to continue delivering lifesaving medical assistance to the people of Pieri and Jonglei State.
