Association of Member Ecumenical Conference of Eastern Africa or AMECEA family commended the Sant Egidio’ peace initiative in South Sudan.
AMECEA prayed for God’s intervention that all parties respond to these regional and international efforts towards lasting peace in the country.
AMECEA Secretary-General Fr Anthony Makunde also commended Sant’ Egidio initiatives and all the regional and international partners for bringing peace.
He said any efforts towards bringing lasting peace to South Sudan are for the good of the entire AMECEA family.
‘Our appeal is to our brothers and sisters in South Sudan to reciprocate to these efforts so that we may put our efforts together towards this common course. We assure them of our prayers and support, asking our Lord the Prince of Peace to intervene,’ said Fr Makunde.
Archbishop of Gulu, Uganda John Baptist Odama prayed that the people of South Sudan will reply to the initiative.
The commend came after leaders of South Sudan government and the opposition groups recently met in Rome and took a critical step towards reconciliation, committing themselves to address the root causes of the conflict.
They signed the declaration and recommitted to adhere to the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement of December 2017.
The declaration was signed by Barnaba Marial Benjamin representing the government; Thomas Cirillo Swaka, Paul Malong Awan Anei and Emanuel Yoanes Yor Akor Ajwanim.
Others included South Sudan Opposition Movements Alliance Henry Dilah Odwar, the SPLM-IO Deputy Chairman as witness; Samuel Tessema as IGAD observer and Paolo Impagliazzo Secretary-General of Sant’ Egidio as facilitator.
