An eye specialist is calling on the entire citizens especially parents to intervene in the health of school children as well as adult, especially on the side of their eyes.
A number of teachers and government officials in Torit State on Friday attended one-day training at Civic Engagement Centre on how to examine pupils’ eyes at school.
Speaking to Radio Emmanuel in an exclusive interview, Eye Specialist Dr. Emmanuel Oryem at Torit Hospital says the training targeted teachers because they are the closest people to children.
‘This is the training on eye health. Basically we target teachers and community leaders because in their school, there are so many children who may need different health care intervention. But the most important also among them is eye health we usually target them, we bring them together to train, then after training right away they will go and screen school children. Some of these children have eye condition. This training is bringing teachers from Hope Academy Moti and particularly but also we have some officials from education and also from health’, says Dr Oryem.
Program Manager for Generation Initiative Organization, Jildo Butrus says they are putting efforts to eradicate some of the diseases causing complications to people’s vision.
He adds that ‘The eye problem used to be trachoma in Lopa Lafon, but now, you see it is everywhere across. It is very important to come with this activity to reduce the multiplication of eye problems. Of course we have cataract. We have also vitamin A deficiency that is definitely night blindness. Eye problems for instance eye injuries you can also get when you are fighting. It is very important to have this training to empower them with knowledge on how to take care of eyes’
Aloyo Mary, one of the participants says she has benefited a lot from the training.
‘They training have benefited me in such a way that, I didn’t know that I have problems with my eyes. But today I really know that I have a problem in one of my eyes’
