The Kingdom of Netherlands signed a partnership agreement with United Nations children agency or UNICEF to improve access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene or WASH in South Sudan.

Netherlands ambassador Janet Alberta says the project will benefit people from Yambio, Torit, Bor and Rumbek.

She adds the areas were chosen due to the relative peace in the regions to ease sustainability of the projects.

Meanwhile UNICEF representative Mohamed Ayoya says lack of clean drinking water exposes people to diseases and affects girl’s education.

He adds that providing clean water will encourage more girls to be in schools and finish their studies.

According to a joint press statement by UNICEF and the Dutch Embassy, in South Sudan only five million people 41 percent of the population has access to clean water.

It adds that the four year resilience program will reach 2.2 million vulnerable people with essential WASH services by 2023.
