The United States on October 11, 2019 in Washington D.C placed sanctions on Ashraf Seed Ahmed Hussein Ali, also known as Al-Cardinal, and Kur Ajing Ater (Ajing) for their involvement in corruption in South Sudan.
Five companies determined to be owned or controlled by Al-Cardinal and one company owned or controlled by Ajing were also sanctioned.
Sentry Co-Founder George Clooney says ‘Al-Cardinal has built a corporate empire on the back of predatory business dealings in South Sudan.’
The action by the US Department of the Treasury’s office of Foreign Assets Control targets Al-Cardinal and his network of businesses, because of the two recent investigative reports by the Sentry namely ‘The Taking of South Sudan’ and ‘Al-Cardinal South Sudan’s Original Oligarch.’
The report detailed the business activities of Al-Cardinal, among others and urged governments to sanction him and his networks.
