Girls take key leadership positions in Pageri County during girl Child’s Day

Three school girls took over key leadership positions in Pageri County of Torit State, marking the International Day of Girls, which was celebrated in Nimule this year.
 
Eleven years old Lona Juma took over as Police Inspector of Pageri County.
 
Meanwhile eighteen years old Hana Atong was appointed as Town Clerk of Nimule Town Council.
 
Oyela Uniz, 21-years took over the office of Pageri County Commissioner, for one day.
 
The school girls vowed to use their experience to advocate for gender equality and child’s rights in South Sudan.
 
Pageri County Commissioner Emiliano Iga says the takeover event gave him the opportunity to know issues facing girls in his area.
 
He calls on parents to stop gender discrimination against the girl child.
 
Head of Plan International field Office in Nimule, Taban Christopher says the takeover initiative seeks to help girls to engage authorities and policy makers on issues affecting the girl child.
 
The International Day of the Girl is marked every 11th October annually, aiming at highlighting and addressing the needs and challenges girls face.
 
It also aims at promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their rights.
