Girl child compensation has stopped in Torit State, governor discloses

The governor of Torit State Tobiolo Alberio Oromo has pronounced that the act of predominant culture of girl child compensation among local communities has stopped.
 
According to Radio Emmanuel, many tribes especially in Torit State demand compensation when a life has been taken in one of the regular conflicts over cattle and pasture, revenge killings and other inter-village conflicts.
 
Speaking during a meeting with visitors from British embassy at his office on Monday, Governor Oromo says the biggest challenge facing communities is forced and early girl child marriages.
 
He says government has strategizes a plan of 2030 to ensure free child marriage.
 
Governor Alberio says his government will not encourage marriage among school going girls despite their age.
 
He encourages dropout children to return to school to fight illiteracy in the state.
 
Political and Human Right officer at the British embassy in Juba Natasha Harington says her team visited Torit to discover issues of child protection, gender-based violence and protection of Journalist among other issues.
 
The diplomat says her embassy is increasing efforts to reach all parts of the country to identify community challenges and how they can support.
 
British Embassy in Juba will use the information gained on the ground to plan for supporting local communities, she notes.
 
According to Plan International, 7.3 percent of girls are married before they reach the age of 15 years and another 42.2 percent will have been married between the ages of 15 and 18. 
 
The report said although 37 percent of girls enrolled in primary school, only around seven percent complete the curriculum and only two percent of them proceed to secondary schools.
