Nuba Mountains raise concern over high prices of consumer goods

Citizens of Gidel in Nuba Mountains have raised their concerns over high prices of consumer goods.
 
For instance, a kilogram of sugar has risen from one hundred and 50 SSP to two hundred and 50 SSP and coffee which used to be at three hundred South Sudanese Pounds has risen to five hundred SSP, Voice of Peace Radio reports.
 
A bucket of sorghum which was sold at two hundred is now sold at three SSP.
 
Women and buyers at Konjo market call on traders to reduce the prices of food and non- food items so that poor people can afford for their family consumption and domestic use.
 
Prices for livestock have also skyrocketed in Gidel.
 
For example, a cow in Gidel market is sold at one hundred and fifty thousand SSP and a bull at two hundred and fifty thousand SSP.
 
The butchers in the area are calling on Kumbur Payam Administration to intervene in order to reduce the prices.
 
Trader Suleiman Adam says high dollar exchange rate is the main cause of high prices.
 
Transportation cost has also contributed to high prices, especially during rainy season.
 
Kumbur Payam Administrator, Juma Hamid Daldum, admits that the local government has failed to control the prices of consumer goods.
 
The increase of prices started this July.
