Resident District Commissioner of Adjumani and NGO representative calls on refugees and host communities to plant more trees instead of destroying them.
During the World Refugee Day celebration, the leaders appeal to the host community and the South Sudanese refugees in various settlements to work together with the development partners to conserve the environment.
The ceremony under the theme: ‘Take a step with refugees, protect the environment’ was led by New Life Music Band on Thursday morning.
Many refugees from other settlements in northern Uganda joined their fellow South Sudanese and host communities to commemorate the day.
Addressing the Day, Resident District Commissioner of Adjumani Taban Data Peter called on refugees and Ugandans to plant many trees, instead of destroying forests.
Modi Simon Peter who represented NGOs in Adjumani called for better use of the natural resources to sustain them for the future generations.
He says NGOs and the Ugandan government are paying serious attention in protecting the environment.
The activist pledged that they will work closely with Ugandan authorities at all levels to implement environmental preservation policies the government has put in place.
Deputy Refugees Desk Officer in the Office of the Prime Minister in Adjumani, Pascal Asasi, promised that they will ask Ugandan communities to give land to refugees to cultivate food crops to supplement the dry ratios WFP is distributing to them on monthly bases.
The celebration was coloured by traditional dances from cultural groups and songs from learners of primary and secondary schools in Pagirinya.
