The Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission or RJMEC and Inter-Governmental Authority on Development or IGAD, have on Friday commenced a two-day workshop for the Joint Security Mechanisms in Juba.

The workshop is a recommendation made in Addis Ababa by the parties to the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan or R-ARCSS.

In a statement, IGAD and RJMEC met to develop all security mechanisms to clear roadmap and implementation schedules for the pending tasks.

RJMEC Interim Chairperson Augostino Njoroge says for some time now people of South Sudan and the region have grown anxious about the slow progress in the Pre-Transitional Phase.

He adds that as the critical date of May 12 nears, it becomes clear that tasks vital to the formation of unified forces necessary for a transitional government of National Unity, could not be completed in time.

The Chairperson also says although issues such as the states and boundaries remain unresolved, the most serious issue is the Permanent Security Arrangements as detailed in the agreement.

The workshop is expected to review current work plans of the mechanisms; challenges experienced and plan on the accomplishment of the pending tasks based on the timeframe agreed upon in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
