The Japanese government has donated over 1.4 to the United Nations Mine Action Service, UNMAS in South Sudan, for mine action project.

In a press statement to media houses, it says the donation will enable humanitarian operations and enhance National Institutional Capacity for Sustainable Mine Action in the country.

Since 2011, Japan has contributed more than 15 million USD to mine action operations in South Sudan.

The contribution has enabled clearance of over 3.2 million square meters of land which is equivalent to approximately 458 football pitches.

Japanese Ambassador Seiji Okada says the government of Japan has been supporting UNMAS as one of the largest donors, because of the importance of its work in the country.

Okada adds that UNMAS project is timely to ensure safety for returnees from refugee camps, POCs and collective centers to their villages and clears land for agriculture.
