The East African Community Secretariat will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Rwanda genocide on April, 7 in Arusha, Tanzania.

According to a statement, the day is in collaboration with the Tanzanian Local Authorities in Arusha, Rwandan Community and International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals.

It is also in partnership with students from high school and universities of Arusha.

The event under the theme, ‘Remember-Unite-Renew’ is to pay tribute to more than one million innocent lives lost through the extermination chaos of Tutsis in Rwanda, in 1994.

The commemoration will focus on the legacy of strength, resilience and unity.

The new generation is called upon to sustain and safeguard the steps Rwanda made over the past 25 years and carry forward the vision of transformation.

Since the 20th commemoration, EAC supported survivors and recognized genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda as a crime against humanity.

It also built a genocide monument in the EAC gardens to honour the innocent lives.

EAC set apart the 7th of April every year on the EAC calendar as a special day to commemorate the 1994 genocide against Tutsi in Rwanda.

The EAC calls all governments and people to stand against genocide in the region.
