UNMAS destroys one million explosive items in Juba suburb

The United Nations Mine Action Service or UNMAS is expected this Wednesday to destroy one millionth explosive items on at Jebel Lumuni, Billinyang Village, 15 kilometres south of Juba. 
 
UNMAS in a statement says it works in coordination with the National Mine Action Authority, UNMISS and humanitarian mine action organizations.
 
Since 2004, UNMAS has coordinated the safe removal and disposal of explosive hazards, including landmines and unexploded or abandoned ordnance, to create a safe and secure environment to support a landmine free South Sudan.
 
UNMAS will undertake the destruction of two large 50 kg air-dropped bombs initially located by the South Sudan People’s Defense Force and the South Sudan National Police Service.
 
The Chairman of the National Mine Action Authority Jurkuch Barach Jurkuch, will be present at the disposal of the bombs on Wednesday to celebrate the destruction of one million explosive items in South Sudan.
 
Richard Boulter, UNMAS South Sudan Programme Manager and the Representatives of the Mine Action organizations who conducted the disposal work will also attend the demolition.
 
He to highlight the important work that they and UNMAS implement to ensure communities can safely access humanitarian assistance and resume their daily livelihoods across South Sudan.
